Review: Protea Foods Lekker Biltong Stokkies

The Lekker Biltong Stokkies by Protea Foods is a natural high protein beef snack, both low in fat, gluten-free and has no added preservatives. The packaging boasts that is a South African recipe made with premium Australian beef and is made here in Australia.

The packaging is a much nicer design than many of the other jerky and biltong brands I’ve reviewed. It definitely speaks “premium” to me. That packaging-first impression was almost the opposite of Barbell Air Dried Steak, where the plainer packaging initially put me off before the brand’s personality became clearer once I actually read the box. So well done to the designers.

In terms of shape and texture, these “Stokkies” which means “Sticks” in Afrikaans are a nice thin cut of real beef, with a visible chilli texture. These make a satisfying snap when snapped or bitten and are a good thickness to be able to chew it without too much effort.

I found the level of spice to be lower than I was hoping for. But I found the texture to be quite interesting, as it has been prepared in a way that is classified as a “biltong”, being air dried, but it has the tough and dry texture of a “jerky”.

I am surprised to see that Protea Foods Lekker Biltong products are available at some Woolworths or Coles stores, according to Google Ads. Typically, these chains only sell the junk brands. I would definitely buy this over Jack Link’s or Local Legends if I saw it on shelves.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to finish this bag, one of my kids got sick and went to hospital and I took it with me but kind of forgot about it for weeks and didn’t finish it. I would probably give this another shot but it is not one of my favourites.
