I went into this one with pretty low expectations after trying the Youfoodz Beef Lasagne, but this meal actually turned out better overall. Unlike the lasagne, Nonna’s Spaghetti Bolognese comes in a full container of food, so there’s no feeling of being short-changed when you peel back the cardboard sleeve.
The flavour is fine, though a little on the bland side if you eat it as-is. The sauce has a decent tomato base and a light hint of herbs and garlic, but it doesn’t have the depth you’d expect from something with “Nonna’s” in the name. I ended up adding a mountain of shredded tasty cheese on top, which made a huge difference and took it from “okay” to actually enjoyable.
I think I prefer this over the lasagne because you get a better portion, and the bolognese itself feels slightly more balanced once you mix it all together. That said, I’d still add cheese next time and probably to the lasagne too just to bring out a bit more flavour.
Convenience-wise, it’s a solid option for a quick lunch or dinner, especially if you’re after something filling without much effort. But if you’re looking for rich, hearty Italian-style pasta, you might find yourself wanting a little more.
Both meals left me feeling hungry afterwards.
