I’m not personally interested in hot cross buns, especially since they typically have saltanas in them and I hate those. But each year, Coles has had some kind of gimmicky special edition flavour variation in the lead-up to Easter. This time, it is Doritos-inspired Cheesy Jalapeno Hot Cross Buns.
Hot cross buns are always a talking point early in the year, with them basically coming out the second the Christmas period ends, so I’m surprised I never heard about these and only got some because my dad bought me a packet.
As a fan of Doritos and Jalapeno, I actually really enjoyed these. The bread was orange all the way through, which was a nice touch, making the bread that classic Doritos shade and flavour, but with the occasional chunks of green chilli and red tomato making an appearance.
I actually enjoyed these more than I was expecting and ate all 4 of them in one go. I would definitely buy some again and maybe add some butter and a slice of cheese or something in there too. In fact, turning these into burgers would be really cool.
I am surprised to see that this has a 3.5 health star rating. Pretty good for hot cross buns, but really. These are hot cross buns in presentation only.
I highly recommend.
