Review: Canterbury Biltong Biersticks

When feeling the packet, I actually thought there were two separate pieces here, but rather it’s more of a flattened sausage, similar to Droewors or other dried sausage meat sticks.

I’ve gotta say, this is incredible. It definitely tastes Italian, perhaps due to the garlic and pepper. It’s incredibly difficult to eat this whilst writing as it is quite small and I can’t get enough of it. It is slightly spicy, very firm in texture but very soft and easy to eat. I can imagine myself eating a dozen of these in one go. At a cost of $3.49 AUD each on Amazon per 25g stick, that would become an expensive meal, but for the price I consider this quite good value compared to the mass-produced salami sticks by Dons and similar brands you can get a 7-Eleven and service stations or supermarkets.

The quality of the meat seemed very good, no weird bits that I needed to spit out except for I did get some clumps of white muscle fibres stuck in the back of my teeth that took me ages to get out.

Canterbury Biltong Biersticks: Original

I don’t know why I didn’t start with the original first. I just grabbed The Italian out of my Amazon box of snacks to review and didn’t actually remember what I’d ordered. So yeah, I feel like I’m reviewing these backwards.

The back of the packaging actually says this is a South African dried sausage, so it’s basically like the Droewors products sold by Original Beef Chief. This definitely has a nice mix of spices in it and a satisfying “snap” with every bite. I quite like it, but have to say The Italian flavour was more interesting.

Review Conclusion

Incredible, among the best Droewors or beef stick products on the market. I highly recommend The Italian flavour, in particular if you’re buying Canterbury Biltong Biersticks and they are available on Amazon.

Canterbury Biltong Air Dried Beef Snacks – Original With Coriander and Pepper

I tied this after the Biersticks, and I’m glad I had this last as I feel it is the weakest offering in the products that I tried. This is disappointing given Biltong is in their name. However, it is of course possible that The Italian Biersticks set my expectations so high that nothing else stacks up!

In terms of texture, this is perfectly good biltong, but in terms of flavour, it’s quite boring. I have a few more flavours coming from Amazon soon. Based on my experiences with trying to make my own Biltong several years ago, I recall coriander seeds being a big part of traditional South African biltong recipes. Of all the biltong I’ve reviewed so far, I must say I prefer Original Beef Chief overall, but in terms of shelf life and packaging, it’s definitely ahead of The Jerky Co.

Canterbury Biltong Air-Dried Beef Snackls Smokey Barbeque

Two weeks have passed since I tried the previous product (my Amazon order for these products was delivered across several weeks), and I’ve got to say that this is the worst dried beef product I’ve reviewed so far. It’s still better than supermarket brands, but for higher-end products, it has been the weakest offering. It did not look like the picture on the packet. It was quite sweet and whilst that makes sense for a Barbeque flavour, it was really boring and uninspiring.

I’ve since ordered both the Biersticks again and had those. Those are definitely my recommendations to anyone looking to buy from Canterbury Biltong.
